Both IMAP and POP3 are protocols that allow you to receive emails from a remote server. Your email client uses these protocols to connect to your mailbox.
IMAP (Recommended)
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) keeps your emails stored on the server. This means:
- Emails are synchronised across all your devices
- Deleting or reading an email on one device reflects on all others
- Emails remain accessible from webmail
POP3
POP3 (Post Office Protocol) downloads emails to your local device and typically removes them from the server. This means:
- Emails are only available on the device they were downloaded to
- Less server storage is used
- Not recommended if you use multiple devices
We recommend IMAP for most users as it keeps messages in sync between your devices and our webmail system.
